Confessions of a Litigious Mind

The random, irrelevant musings of a law school graduate.

Thursday, December 14, 2006

you see, this is a huge part of the problem. too much shit like that goes on. you hear about something new every few days. then people get all irate because you're "not supporting the troops" and all of a sudden you're a terrorist or a terrorist sympathizer. so, wwtd (what would a terrorist do)? probably rape and murder. just a guess.

so we should send people who aren't fucking crazy and who are smart enough to do their job without any of these "recreational activities" on the side. but the problem with that is most people smart enough to not rape and murder aren't going to readily join the army. the vast majority (not all) of the people i know of who served are kids who didn't go to college, had no ambition, no life plan, and were just like fuck it, i'll join the army. and there are also 1 or 2 who are crazy and like killing. i shit you not. i'd link to one's myspace, but that might give away a bit too much.

anyway, the point is it's very hard to have respect for the "noble cause" when shit like this is reported all the time. that's all.

oh i absolutely recognize that i'm using anecdotal evidence as well. in fact, i tried to qualify my statements by saying "the majority (not all) of the people i know..."

this isn't a political blog, and i dont want it to be one. but for whatever reason i read this story this morning and it just irked me, so i wanted to mention my thoughts on it. i was morally outraged, and let's be honest, that doesn't happen often.

yes, and i'm sure i probably exaggerated a little, and part of it is that the media of course doesn't tell us when soldiers aren't doing these things.

my personal experiences are unfortunate, but not necessarily representative of the whole.

wow, talk about hyperbole, dicta. i agree with holmes' first comment on this one. the majority of people *I* know who have served/are serving in the military have received formal education (1 in college, 2 in law school). so what?

"anyway, the point is it's very hard to have respect for the "noble cause" when shit like this is reported all the time."

"all the time"? i'd like to see your evidence for THAT. i'm only aware of this case and the detainee abuse scandal -- and i read the news several times a day. do you have a secret news source that you're hiding from the rest of the world? if so, please do share.

well i think i already answered your question. it's like the saying goes, no news is good news. anytime the media reports on something, it's bad.

besides, i've clarified, three times now, that i was speaking from my experience. i'm so fantastically joyous that the people you know have received a formal education. the one's i know mostly have not.

so if anyone else has any criticisms of this post, let it not be about my personal experience. maybe someone can bring up the fact that i never capitalize anything, we've only talked about that once before.

oy, sorry for the delay -- i've been busy holding a dinner party with some really awful people. :P

anyhoo, i think my objection is that it seems like you're now backtracking and attempting to revoke your initial post (or some of it, anyway). that indicates that perhaps you were blogging impulsively (yes, it's your blog, you do what you want, etc. etc.). but still.

anyway, if it's any consolation, i still agree that this type of news doesn't make one feel proud of his country's army.

not that one ought to be proud of murder machines, but i digress.
