something to make you think

i was a philosophy and religion major in undergrad. philosophy is, and always will be, my first academic love. however, due to this law school business, i havent thought, discussed, or read nearly enough in a long time. god i should've gotten the phd. of course i still can, but i need a break from school after this.

anyway, i came across a few quotes this morning, maybe just something to get you thinking. discussion would be nice, or just enjoy them. either way.

I do not by any means know atheism as a result; even less as an event: it is a matter of course with me, from instinct. I am too inquisitive, too questionable, too exuberant to stand for any gross answer. God is a gross answer, an indelicacy against us thinkers—at bottom merely a gross prohibition for us: you shall not think!

Early in the morning, when day breaks, when all is fresh, in the dawn of one's strength—to read a book at such a time is simply depraved!

It was previously a question of finding out whether or not life had to have a meaning to be lived. It now becomes clear, on the contrary, that it will be lived all the better if it has no meaning.

Wit is educated insolence.

The real question of life after death isn't whether or not it exists, but even if it does, what problems this really solves.

awesome topic.

i'll respond to the nietzsche for now, and will come back to the others after i've considered them.

1. interesting quote. if you just look at the first part of the quote, without considering nietzsche's rant about god, it seems as though he is saying, question everything, and never settle for an answer that is simply fed to you. this is sound advice, i think.

2. heh. he has a point. why try to take in someone else's point of view at such a time when you could spend your time considering your own thoughts? that's assuming, of course, that the morning is truly "the dawn of one's strength." some people just aren't morning people (in which case, maybe they'd be better off reading a book to set a good mood for themselves.)

anyhoo, i'm not giving these the consideration they deserve, so i'll come back to them later.

humm i took the second one to mean you should spend a morning doing something outside. "when all is fresh" just reminds me of a bright summer morning when everything is covered with dew and green looking, it always makes me want to get out and go for a walk or something fun.

Coincidence, I just posted about god. I love that quote from aristotle. It's one of my favorites. Oh, and I think it's really ironic that your stalker doesn't want people to message her if she doesn't know them.
