a slip of the tongue

and i'm not talking about me and your mom last night. i'm not gonna get very political, but just one thing. tonight i saw a news clip that was highly disturbing. trent lott, commenting on the withdrawal of harriet miers, said that he's sure president bush will look all around the country and find a suitable "man, woman, or minority" to fill the position. wow, what a fucking dick. isn't it so weird how white, southern republicans are always accused of being racist? i wonder where that stereotype comes from.

unintentional classification? i dunno. seems like a lot of people (re: white, generally middle-class, christian/catholic males) are partaking in the new 'classification' craze. recently, a duquesne uni (catholic uni in PA) student referred to homosexual acts as "subhuman." seems like anyone not a white middle-class christian male is/does subhuman/subhuman acts, thus warranting a special classification (e.g. "minority"). but there i go, making my own stereotypical comments.

yeah i dont think he was trying to sound like that, but it was a pretty bad slip nonetheless. let's just hope those aren't his true colors coming out, but given his past i dont know.

well, technically, two people - trent lott and ryan miner. and yes, you make a good point - it's not just well-off white males that are being stereotypical these days.

as for myself, you found me out. guilty as charged.

an additional thought...i suppose if you're going to call me out on stereotyping, you'd also have to rip on dicta for the same thing. not trying to start shit, but i'm just saying...(from dicta's post: "isn't it so weird how white, southern republicans are always accused of being racist? i wonder where that stereotype comes from.")

let's not turn a blind eye, eh?

hey now, let's not rip on the master of the forum. hahahaha. besides, my comment is like the equivalent of calling someone an alleged murderer. first, i'm not sure that pointing out a group who is often stereotyped in a certain manner is in fact stereotyping the group itself (if it is, watch out anthropologists/sociologists). second, the "i wonder..." statement simply offers an example of why people might stereotype this particular group (here, because of the statements of 1 or 2 white, southern republicans).

haha we're such bigots. but seriously, it's not that i have a problem with a particular class/group/whatevs, in and of itself, but i do have a problem when what we call the 'majority' tries to justify its own perceived superiority by disparaging the non-majority, whoever they may be. here's an interesting article on the topic.

and dicta, sorry, i did put in a disclaimer that i wasn't trying to start trouble. :P just sounded to me like you were confirming that the stereotype must be true/be of substance in order for it to have achieved its status as a stereotype. but enough of that.
