funny, the haha kind?

we got new computers at work today. the old computers were dells. the new computers, also dells. aka, pieces of shit.

so naturally, this morning we had to turn them on for the first time and make sure they work. they went thru their initial installations and whatnot, which normally take a few extra minutes the first time. no big deal. except that mine didn't work. it froze, then moved slowly, then froze again. after wasting an hour, i finally just went back to my old computer. luckily, there were a lot of tech people in the office today so it was like having the helpdesk next to you.

the good news: it only took experienced tech people 9 hours to get my brand new piece of shit dell computer to work. but finally, it does (i think).

the bad news: it's still a piece of shit dell.

dell fucking sucks.

I wouldn't totally blame Dell, Microsoft surely had a lot of input into your issues. I put XP on my work computer (a Dell, but UVM is looking at new suppliers) because over a year since Vista came out and some stuff still doesn't work, and even before I finished installing it, I got a blue screen. I blame the problems on all software and instrument makers for not writing code for Mac or Linux.

i would buy a mac in a second, except that i find them completely counter-intuitive. i've heard (although not yet seen in person) that macs can now come w/ mice that have both left and right clicks, which would be a huge start for me (though i'll of course admit that what i'm used to is due to the fact that the only macs i regularly used were before the time of the mouse). i also don't like the desktop/menu format, and i hate the ones that have that long bar of stuff along the bottom just on your desktop. i'm a bit ocd about the desktop, so i have yet to find a mac i like. however, i imagine that they may be making them (or may already have) more flexible and customizable to suit people like myself.
